One of the largest agricultural exhibitions under private ownership in the Southern hemisphere kicks off today. The annual Nampo Harvest Day is being held virtually for the first time in its history this year.
Food For Mzansi is also watching out for an announcement by UK journalist and master of wine Tim Atkin who will highlight two wines that achieved 100-point scores in a highly anticipated 2020 SA Special Report.
Also on Food For Mzansi’s radar is day two of the largest agriculture and food systems event on the continent and a plant and health management webinar.
1. Nampo Harvest Day goes virtual
Grain SA’s Nampo Harvest Day, one of the largest agricultural exhibitions under private ownership in the southern hemisphere, is taking place virtually today from 09:00.
Nampo enables producers and other role players in the agricultural industry to experience the latest technology and products on offer in the farming industry first-hand. The NAMPO Harvest Day also offers producers the opportunity to obtain knowledge from experts in their various agricultural fields by means of debates and discussion panels.
The session from 11:30-12:30 will be led by senior economist at Grain SA, Corne Louw, who will be putting the spotlight on scoring and technology.
Later Luan van der Walt, an economist at Grain SA, who will unpack the market overview of the summer grains at 14:00-14-30. Finally, Dr Dirk Strydom, manager of grain economics and marketing at Grain SA, will talk about developing the future from 14:30-15:00.

2. Virtual wine awards
Wine makers and wine lovers are invited to join journalist and master of wine, Tim Atkin, live on Instagram at 10:00.
The wine expert will announce the two wines – one white and one red – that achieved 100-point scores in his highly anticipated 2020 SA Special Report. He will also reveal his overall wines, winemaker, grower, co-operative and legend of the year and discuss the state of the South African wine industry.
Among other things he will also discuss the outstanding quality of the 2017 vintage, the fact that semillon and syrah are still underrated, and that South African wines remain some of great bargains of the fine wine world.
There will be a chance for you to post questions during the live Instagram session. Tim will also be available for one-on-one media interviews via Zoom, Skype, WhatsApp or telephonically, following the announcement this morning.
3. Nutrition and health in urban areas
In case you missed it, it is day two of the tenth annual summit of the African Green Revolution Forum at 10:00 this morning.
The summit is one of the largest agriculture and food systems events on the continent. The theme of the day is nutrition and health, where international experts will unpack solutions on how to create demand for African products that fuel diverse, healthy diets with the safety and quality every consumer needs.
At 11:00 there will be a parallel session about reaching urban food consumers through resilient supply chains. This is followed by a session on feeding and employing Africa’s urban population. The summit will end with the Gogettaz agripreneur competition finale.
